100 years ago the first flight for Venice departed from Venice Lido
With an unusual buzz, on February 19th 1911, the Farman II biplane took off from the Excelsior Beach, piloted by the temerarious Umberto Cagno, born in Turin, car driver and provided to the pioneering of civil aviation. The destination of this first flight was supposed to be Venice, but for a dense fog the plane did not leave the skies over the island of Lido. Finally, with optimal weather conditions, only on March 2nd 1911 the aircraft could fly over the city. In a crowed St. Mark’s Square thousand of incredulous spectators looked up in the sky the Farman II biplane flying over their heads.
Dr. Pietro Lando, graduated in History with a great passion for aviation, was able to collect, after careful research, the historical documents that describe the event.
